When Jesse left the country, he was a free young man,
Till the war came down and dealt him its heavy hand.
Well three long years of strife have come and gone.
Now Peacetime Jesse’s tryin’ to make it home.

He lost a friend in battle, lost his innocence too.
Now he’s back in Kentucky and he don’t know what to do.
Jesse’s wife and family wonder where his heart has gone.
