My Old Kentucky Home

The song, "My Old Kentucky Home", was written by Stephen Foster in 1853, just a few short years before the beginning of the Civil War. Stephen Foster's sensitivity to societal ills was often found in his musical compositions, along with a kind of longing for peace, which eluded him for a large part of his life. Frederick Douglass
a former slave and noted pubic speaker on the issues of slavery and abolition, considered "My Old Kentucky Home" to be a composition which was sensitive to abolitionists and it was a favorite amidst the abolitionist movement. "My Old Kentucky Home" eventually became the state song of Kentucky.

Abraham Lincoln of Kentucky
Abraham Lincoln (often called the "Great Emancipator" for his issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery) was born near Hodgenville, KY in 1809. Here is a photo of a new sculpture in downtown Hodgenville, which celebrates President Lincoln's early boyhood years in Kentucky, in honor of the upcoming 200th anniversary of his birth. Lead sculptors Robert Firmin and Eugene Daub created this wonderful tribute to our country's greatest president.
